Puzant Thomain was born in the village of Ban Pudên in Cambodia. He attended elementary school at St. John’s School, Angkor, before studying at the University of Phnom Penh, where he earned a degree in sociology. He worked as a journalist for the Cambodian Press Group, which publishes two newspapers, The Cambodia Daily and The Cambodia Times, both of which are banned by the Cambodian government
He was imprisoned by the Khmer Rouge for his work with independent media and was eventually released after months of negotiations. After the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979, Puzant founded the Cambodian Forum for Aids Prevention, which works to fight HIV/AIDS through education.
